Maran case: Another legal victory for DMK
The DMK has achieved its second major legal victory in three months, courtesy the CBI special court, which on Wednesday discharged the Maran brothers in the illegal telephone exchange case.
Chennai
Former Union Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran and his elder brother Kalanithi Maran have been discharged in the telephone exchange case, which was touted to be an “open and shut case” almost a year since coming out clean in the Aircel-Maxis case and a quarter after Kanimozhi and A Raja were exonerated in the 2G case.
The two cases not only cost the DMK and its ally Congress badly at the hustings but also strained the their relationship and pinned the corruption badge on the Dravidian major.
Quick in celebrating the victory, a relieved Dayanidhi Maran said; “Once again justice has prevailed. I have been stating from day one that these allegations are politically motivated and foisted falsely, out of jealously and business rivalry. This is a watershed moment for me. When I took to politics, I came to continue my father’s good work and fulfil his vision. Not once have I ever misused public office or my position,” Maran told DT Next.
Calling it a “shame on CBI and fraud criminal jurisprudence”, auditor S Gurumurthy, editor of Tughlak magazine who brought out the alleged telephone exchange case, took to Twitter and said, “The honest CBI officer who found out the crime was almost sacked for it. It is an open and shut case. The CBI should appeal against the discharge forthwith.”
