Heavy rain forecast in southern districts
Revenue Minister RB Udhayakumar on Tuesday said that as many as 51 deep sea fishing boats that ventured from Kanniyakumari are yet to return to the shore, and that the vessels were accounted for in the coastal areas of Karnataka, Goa, Kerala and Lakshadweep.

He made this disclosure while explaining the steps taken on the IMD’s forecast about a depression for the southern districts. He said all other boats, both deep-sea and motorised, which ventured out from Kanniyakumari, Ramanathapuram and Thoothukudi, have returned and were asked to wait out the system.Â
The Regional Meteorological Centre here has said that the low pressure area that formed on Monday over the southwest Bay of Bengal has turned into a depression leading to moderate rainfall in the southern districts of the state. The sky will remain overcast in Chennai district for the next two days. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.Â
Moderate to rather heavy rainfall is likely to occur at many places over south Tamil Nadu and light to moderate rain is likely at a few places over north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Dr S Balachandran, director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre, warned fishermen stating that since there is a high possibility for strong winds, they are advised not to venture into the sea.
