Appoint women as priests in non agama shrines, says VCK
The VCK has urged the state government to appoint women priests in HR&CE run temples not bound by Agamas (Hindu scriptures). A resolution to this effect was adopted at the women’s wing meeting of the party.

Recalling the judgment of the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court, which had allowed a woman to continue as priest (archaka) of a Durgaiamman Temple at Nalluthevanpatty near Usilampatti in Madurai in 2008, the VCK women’s wing stated that the judgement had clarified that women cannot be appointed as priests only in agama bound temples and there was no bar in appointing them in other temples.
“Gods of temples in the southern region of India were devoid of manu dharma and hence the situation does not provide for confining women to household chores here,” VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan said. He urged the government to bring suitable amendments to make abodes of Gods free from gender discrimination.
