Suspended Bharathiar University V-C gets bail, but with riders
In a big relief to suspended vice-chancellor of the Bharathiar University A Ganapathy, who was arrested for alleged graft, the Madras High Court on Thursday granted him conditional bail.
Chennai
Justice A D Jagadish Chandira while granting conditional bail directed Ganapathy to surrender his passport before the trial court and not to leave Coimbatore.Â
The judge also directed Ganapathy to appear before the Investigating Officer both in the morning and evening regularly until further orders.Â
Ganapathy was arrested on February 3, 2018, for accepting a bribe of Rs 30 lakh from a person called T Suresh, an assistant professor aspirant.Â
On information from Suresh, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption trapped Ganapathy while receiving Rs 1 lakh in cash and cheques to the tune of Rs 29 lakh. Â
The suspended vice-chancellor was lodged in the Coimbatore Central jail along with chemistry professor Dharmaraj who allegedly brokered the deal.Â
The special court in Coimbatore had earlier denied bail to Ganapathy twice on the ground that he could tamper with the evidence if released on bail.Â
Earlier, police had claimed that they couldn’t secure the cheque leaves, which were handed over to the V-C by the job aspirant, as Ganapathy didn’t divulge any information on their whereabouts during interrogation.Â
On February 7, sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption searched the office of Ganapathy at the Bharathiar University.Â
The team of DVAC officials, scanned computers and copied its contents on to a hard disk. They also inquired Registrar (in-charge) B Vanitha regarding the alleged corrupt deals by Ganapathy and director of Distance Education Mathivanan.
