Bids invited for import of sand for Rs 548.73 crore
In a bid to ease the shortage of sand that has seriously affected construction activities in the state, the Sand Mining wing of the Public Works Department has decided to import 30 lakh metric tonnes of river sand from various countries at a whopping Rs 548.73 crore for two years.

According to a document issued by Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), five lakh metric tonnes would be imported each month.
The tender notification explained that any individual firm or joint venture can import the sand and hand it over to the PWD, after which assessment would be done for quality purpose.
“The sand will be imported at Kamarajar Port, Ennore, Adani Port, Kattupalli, and V O Chidambaranar Port, Thoothukudi,” it noted.
The government has laid conditions for the bidders to ensure the quality of the imported sand, and insisted that the importer should bear the cost of taking the poor quality sand out of Tamil Nadu.
“The purchaser (PWD) shall inspect the goods to check conformity to the contract specifications. If the goods fail to meet standards, road transportation would not be allowed,” the document added.
The government was gearing up to open new sand quarries in the state after Supreme Court stayed Madras HC Order, which banned sand quarries.
