A little after it passed Vaniyambadi station, the train from Dibrugarh in Assam was stopped after someone in the fourth coach pulled the alarm chain. As rumour spreads that there was a bomb on the train, passengers jumped down from the train and ran helter-skelter. Smoke emanating from the eighth compartment added fuel to their fears resulting in more panic.

The Chennai-bound double decker express from Bangalore that arrived at the spot was stopped by that train’s driver when he saw the crowd on the tracks.

Following information being passed on to Jolarpet and Vaniyambadi railway stations, railway police arrived on the scene and began investigations. They apprehended the four youth, who are suspected to be responsible for the trouble.

The melee resulted in Vivek Express being delayed by more than one hour, while other trains coming on the same line were stopped at various locations.
