The ceiling fan fell on Dinseh Kumar (19), studying at the University’s constituent college in Tirupattur at around 2.30 pm on Wednesday last. University Vice Chancellor K Murugan and Registrar V Peruvazhuthi who rushed to the college on hearing the news, revealed that the university would pay the student’s medical bills. “The student suffered only mild injuries and so was treated as an outpatient at a private hospital nearby. We also assured the parents that medical expenses if any would be paid by the university,” said Peruvazhuthi, speaking to DT Next on Monday.

Meanwhile, PWD had completed plastering ceilings wherever necessary, while all electrical fittings have been checked in the college. However, sources revealed that plaster falling from the ceiling was a regular occurrence, although the building is not even five years old.

While students complained of electric shock from switch boards in classrooms, university officials blamed the PWD for poor quality work. “We now plan to write a stiff letter to the CE PWD (Buildings division) but whether this will result in any action, only time will tell,” said Peruvazhuthi.
