A 40-year-old former councillor, an AIADMK member, was hacked to death by an unidentified four-member gang on the outskirts of Minjur on Monday.
Chennai
The deceased, Siva, was the ward councillor in Thaleripalayam village near Nathiyambakkam from 2006 to 2016. He is survived by his wife Lakshmi (38) and three daughters.Â
On Monday afternoon, Siva was visiting his relatives’ houses in the locality to invite them for his elder daughter’s wedding. When he was returning home on his two wheeler, four men on two bikes followed him. As he reached the outskirts, they surrounded him and hacked him multiple times, leaving him dead.Â
A few passers-by noticed Siva lying in a pool of blood and alerted the Minjur police station. However, before the police personnel reached the spot, villagers gathered in the murder spot and staged a protest, demanding the immediate arrest of the killers. They also tried to prevent the police from taking Siva’s body. Ponneri DSP Raja, revenue divisional officer Muthusamy and other officials held talks with the protesters and assured that the murderers would be arrested within a day.Â
Meanwhile, a few unidentified men set four houses in the locality on fire, allegedly to avenge for Siva’s death. However, no one was hurt, and the fire was put out in an hour. Sniffer dogs were brought to the spot and a special team has been formed to nab the murderers, said police.
