Activists seek resumption of Uyyakondan canal works

As the Uyyankondan canal that flows through Tiruchy has again turned a garbage dump and sewage drain, social activists on Monday approached the Collector demanding the resumption of works to revive the canal so that water can be stored in 33 water bodies and boost irrigation in the region. The works were put off recently.

According to the activists, the Uyyankondan river, which was a tributary of the Cauvery, was diverted from Pettaivaithalai and linked at Valavanthaikottai lake in Tiruverumbur by Rajaraja Cholan over 1,000 years.

Later, it was extended up to Cherandi lake in Thanjavur and was one of the major water sources for the people of Tiruchy and Thanjavur till recently.

In due course, the free-flowing Uyyankondan was polluted with household sewage and garbage. Later, the district administration formed the Uyyankondan retrieval committee a few years back and desilting works were undertaken. It was gradually revived and beautification was also made.

However, the works were recently stopped for no apparent reason. Now, the residents have resumed dumping trash in it. The activists appealed for resuming the works so that water can be stored in the canal.
