Cop celebrates antisocial’s birthday, faces action

Police sources said that Kannankurichi inspector Karunakaran was a close acquaintance of antisocials and never hesitated from displaying his affection towards them. Among the antisocials was Susindaran (29) from Kondappanaickenpatty, who was involved in several assault cases and in an attempt to murder case. He shared a close friendship with the inspector. 

“The antisocial developed a bond with the inspector, who was investigating his criminal affairs,” said another police. Police said Susindaran, who came out on bail from the Salem Central Prison a few days ago had organised his birthday party by cutting a cake with his associates. Thereafter, the antisocial took a cake to a party with inspector Karunakaran, at his residence. The inspector welcomed him and extended his wish, by offering him a portion of the cake. 

This video of the police officer, in uniform, giving the cake to antisocial has gone viral on WhatsApp and other social media, causing embarrassment to the Tamil Nadu police, who were basking in the success of arresting antisocials during the Chennai birthday event. Salem City Police Commissioner K Shankar ordered an inquiry into the incident and found that the inspector had close links with the antisocial element. The commissioner kept the police inspector on the waiting list and a departmental inquiry was under way.
