“His corruption is big and scope for investigation is large; however, the suspended Vice Chancellor remained tight lipped throughout the course of interrogation. He refused to co-operate and didn’t reply to any of our queries,” said a senior police officer privy to the investigation. Ganapathy was caught red-handed in a Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) trap when he took a bribe of Rs 1 lakh in cash and Rs 29 lakh in cheque leaves from a job aspirant at his residence. A professor was also arrested and a case was registered against the Director of Distance Education in the Bharathiar University for brokering the corrupt deals.

“The VC didn’t say a word about receiving bribes, which runs into several crores of rupees for mass appointments done a few months ago. He also refused to answer if he paid Rs 2 crore to a politician to secure his job as V-C in the university. His reaction to all questions was a stony silence,” said the officer. Police claimed that they couldn’t secure any cheque leaf, which was handed over to Ganapathy by the job aspirant. After the end of custody, the police produced Ganapathy before John Mino, judge of a special court for DVAC, here. Ganapathy, who remained calm and composed, charged that his signature was forcibly obtained by police in a confession statement during custody. He also told the judge that he was subjected to mental torture.
