They also withdrew their protest after two women doctors were transferred and departmental action was promised against them for further action.

The victim, R Manimala, 26, a native of Panruti in Cuddalore district, was working in the Vellakovil Primary Health Centre and was staying in the government quarters.

On February 10, she was found hanging in her room. Her relatives and other nurses launched a protest alleging that she took the extreme step due to harassment by two doctors and sought action against them. The two doctors had allegedly reprimanded her for taking a day’s leave.

Despite talks, the protesting nurses and family members refused to withdraw their agitation. They, however, relented after officials promised to hold an RDO enquiry into her death. Health Department officials said the two doctors from the Primary Health Centre have been shifted to Erode and Dindigul districts. They also assured that they would consider a plea by the kin of the deceased for a government job.

Meanwhile, nurses in all government hospitals in the state too protested, demanding suspension of the two women doctors.
