Fishermen leaders held a meeting on Tuesday evening and decided to begin the indefinite strike. They also decided that fishermen from the six districts of Ramanathapuram, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Karaikal will participate in the road roko.Â
The main demand of the fishermen during the protest would be the immediate release of 136 Tamil Nadu fishermen who are lodged in various Lankan prisons and the release of 179 boats held by the Lankan government.Â
It was also decided to seek compensation from the Centre for the boats and nets of fishermen damaged by the Lankan Navy. As decided in the meeting, more than 750 boats in Rameswaram did not venture into the sea on Wednesday and over 10,000 fishermen lost their daily wages and business.
