A city-based doctor was on Thursday arrested for sedating and sexually abusing a 17-year-old nursing student in a hospital.
Chennai
According to police, KT Ravindran, 47, chairman of ARR Medical Centre in Singanallur, sexually abused the minor, a native of Kodaikanal. She was pursuing diploma in nursing at a private college in Dindigul and had joined the hospital to undergo practical training along with other students. On February 5, the girl had asked for medicine from the doctor for cold.
“After examining the girl, the doctor administered an injection suggesting that she is suffering from heavy cold. Ravindran also gave another shot claiming that she was anaemic,” police said. When the girl slipped into a semi-conscious state, Ravindran allegedly sexually abused her in his chamber. However, the victim managed to run away, but collapsed in the hospital premises under the influence of the sedative.
Fellow students revived her. As the girl narrated her ordeal, other students informed Ravindran’s wife, who urged them not to escalate the matter and promised that he would mend his ways.
However, the victim, who wanted to teach a lesson to the doctor and prevent other students from facing a similar situation, informed the child line staff. A team of child line staff visited the hospital for an inquiry and filed a complaint at the All Women’s Police Station (AWPS) - East.
The victim was subjected to a medical examination at the hospital. The AWPS personnel subsequently arrested Ravindran under sections 7, 9 (e) read with 10 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012. He was produced in the Mahila Court and sent on remand to the Coimbatore Central Prison.
