Tamil Nadu House renaming kicks up a row

The state government’s reported decision to rename Tamil Nadu House in New Delhi, christened by the late chief minister CN Annadurai, has drawn flak from opposition parties and activists, who have urged the authorities to withdraw the government order that was issued recently in this regard.

The old and new building of Tamil Nadu House are going to be renamed as Vaigai Tamil Illam and Pothigai Tamil Illam and the GO has been issued, confirmed sources in Delhi. Though the principal commissioner there claimed that only the buildings were to be named and that Tamil Nadu House would remain, this has not mollified the critics.

“The chief minister might have done it to get his name featured in a plaque in New Delhi. There are many pressing issues to attend to. Instead of attending to them, they are renaming Tamil Nadu house,” said DMK spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP TKS Elangovan.

Officials in Delhi said the naming proposal was mooted by them to the state government so as to avoid the informal usage of old and new. “The matter has been taken to the notice of the government, which is necessiating a clarification,” an official added.
