Cops bust Rs 2 crore medical seat racket by Dharmapuri couple
Central Crime Branch sleuths arrested a 37-year-old man on charges of cheating scores of medical seat aspirants to the tune of Rs 2 crore after promising to get them seats at medical colleges across the country.
Chennai
The accused, R Rajesh alias Rajeshwaran, a native of Dharmapuri, who was absconding since 2016, was nabbed by a special team which traced him to his hometown. He has similar cheating cases pending against him, said police, adding that his wife Anandhi, too, is facing a case that is now being probed by the CCB.
Explaining his modus operandi, police said Rajeshwaran published advertisements in many prominent newspapers claiming that his firm would secure medical seats under management quota. This attracted gullible parents who were desperate to secure a bright future for their wards.
“He set up an office in Bengaluru and even procured an Aadhaar card for himself. He usually deals with people through brokers and would make an entry only in the end, like the managing director of the firm, to receive the money,” said an official who is part of the investigation. CCB registered a case against him based on a complaint by U Anitha of Egmore in 2015. Rajeshwaran was allegedly given Rs 35 lakh to secure a medial seat for her ward at Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University, Pune.
He allegedly cheated seven other people in the similar fashion, police said. Only after the arrest, police realised that there is a cheating case of Rs 20 lakh pending against him in CCB itself. Rajeshwaran has been remanded in judicial custody, and CCB sleuths have plans to take him into custody and arrest his aides.
