Students launch food truck run by transgenders
The minute you think of the word cook, an image of one clad in an apron and doling out food conjures up in your mind. But, here we have three of them who have gone the extra mile to build up a connect with the community.
Coimbatore
The three transgender cooks who have begun a novel initiative will be putting more than food on the plate. Â
In a first of its kind, the three of them will soon take their preparations to the colleges in Coimbatore city in a ‘food truck’. Christened ‘Trans Pride’, the truck is an initiative by students of a private college and is aimed at increasing the acceptance of the third gender by the society, especially the younger generation.Â
‘Trans Pride’, would be on rounds for a fortnight offering yummy food items prepared by the three transgenders. Tasneem, a social activist with over 15 years of cooking experience, Suchitra, an expert in Indian cuisine and Yamini would prepare items such as sandwiches, frankies, burgers, pakodas, biriyani and juices in the fully equipped truck and sell them. The truck was flagged off by Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT) Joint Correspondent Shankar Vanavarayar and Rotary Coimbatore Central President N Damodharan on Tuesday.Â
A team of KCT students would go along with the truck and make arrangements. Stressing the need for giving greater opportunities to transgenders in all sectors, including education, he lauded the students for their initiative to solve social problems. Damodharan said the Rotary was glad to support this initiative of students to make the society more inclusive and would follow it up by making it a successful commercial venture in the days to come.
