Students caned during bus fare stir in Vellore
Minor commotion prevailed on Vellore-Arni Road after police resorted to a mild lathicharge to disperse a group of students of the Muthurangam Government Arts College, who were protesting the bus fare hike, on Tuesday. Some students were injured in the caning by cops.

The students during the protest blocked traffic on Vellore- Arni Road and shouted slogans against the government. Though police and revenue officials asked the students to leave the spot, they refused to return to their college.Â
CPM taluk committee member S Arumugam, who came to the spot, spoke in support of the students. A few students threw water sachets at a bus that passing through the road, following which the police warned them.Â
However, the situation was going out of control when the police tried to remove Arumugam, who was allegedly encouraging students.Â
Following this, the police resorted to a mild lathicharge and chased them for nearly 200 metres on Arni Road towards Bagayam. Some students, who refused to budge, were forcibly removed by the cops. SP P Pagalavan, who arrived at the spot, held an inquiry into the incident.
