The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Thursday dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking to make voting compulsory in elections.

Also various factors like caste, religion and so on play an important role in the elections and the voters are not given a fair choice in electing their representatives. Because of unfit persons being elected the country’s growth is affected. So, radical changes are needed in the electoral system, he stated. With all the recommendations he had sent a petition to Election Commission of (EC), but no steps were taken. So, the court should direct the EC to make necessary changes in the electoral system for betterment of the nation, prayed the petitioner.
Justices Sathyanarayana and Hemalatha dismissed the petition stating that the EC is doing its best to reform the electoral system and added that they believe that EC will introduce the reforms soon.
