PIL to make voting compulsory in elections to be heard today
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) had been filed at the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court seeking to make voting compulsory in elections. The Court, on Wednesday, had adjourned the hearing of the petition to Thursday.

Petitioner, Abimani, from Madurai, in his petition, had stated that currently democracy is in a bad shape and the electoral system needs a radical change. No proper representatives are elected in the electoral system and in many cases money decides the winners. Also various factors like caste, religion, etc., play an important role in the elections and the voters are not given a fair choice in electing their representatives. So radical changes are needed in electoral system, said the PIL.Â
For instance candidates, who had filed their nominations, should be selected only based on a lucky draw and the deposit money should be returned to the others. The PIL also sought to bar door-to-door campaigning. All the voters should be made to vote in the election and only then a suitable candidate who would help in the growth of the country would be elected.Â
The petitioner said he had sent his recommendations to the Election Commission of India(ECI) but there has been no response to his petition and sought the court to direct ECI to make necessary changes in the electoral system.
