Drummer’s ‘marriage’ offer for tamers creates flutter in Tiruchy

An unusual video in which a drummer (thandora) campaigned for jallikattu in Manapparai with a marriage offer as a prize for a man who tames the bull owned by a 21-year-old woman from Mettupatti in Salem, went viral in the region. Organisers who were shocked to see the video grab claimed that the information was false and they wanted to lodge a police complaint against the drummer.

It is a regular practice in the region to campaign with a thandora for announcing important events in the villages. And one such announcement shocked even the village heads who had appointed the drummer to canvass a jallikattu event that is scheduled to take place on January 21 at Periya Anaikarapatti village near Vaiyyampatti in Manapparai.

The drummer, who was identified as Palanisamy (62) of Karungulam was seen canvassing the event at a market place. In the video that went viral from Pongal, runs for 1.38 minutes, the drummer clearly announces the marriage offer. He cautions that if two persons tame the particular bull, the offer will be invalid. He also goes on inviting the people to bring bulls that may also win prizes like gold coins and other valuables.

When contacted, the Periya Anaikaraipatti jallikattu organisers said they too were shocked and denied such an invitation. One of the organisers, on condition of anonymity, claimed that some youth were involved in the mischief. “We have warned Palanisamy and plan to lodge a complaint with the police,” they added.
