Alanganallur gets ready for the big event
A ‘pandakkal’ was erected in the jallikattu arena at Alanganallur in Madurai district on Monday. Special offers were offered at the vadivaasal, just before the function began. Works to paint and decorate the vadivaasal too commenced simultaneously.

Though jallikattu is popular in Avaniyapuram and Palamedu, government celebrations are held only in Alanganallur. Madurai Collector K Veera Raghav Rao and Sundarajan, president of Jallikattu Organising Committee, Alanganallur, participated in the function.
The Collector directed Sundarajan and other members of Alanganallur Jallikattu organising committee to follow all the rules in setting up the arena, stands for visitors and gallery for media.
Bull tamer seeks permission
Manirathinam, of Mudakathan, who lost an eye in jallikattu earlier, requested the Madurai district administration to allow him to participate in the event. In a petition submitted to the Madurai Collector on Mon-day, he said that he had been into bull taming for six years now and though he had lost one of his eyes, doctors had given him a fitness certificate. “Doctors have certified that my vision is perfect in the other eye,” he said. When asked what if he happens to lose another eye he replied that he will be more than happy to lose it in the jallikattu.
Alanganallur draws a good number of foreigners to the jallikattu. In 2017, they could not witness the event as dates could not be confirmed due to the protests. But, this year foreigners have planned a visit to witness the grand event that would be held on January 16.
