Allow traditional sport during Church fest: Plea
A petition seeking permission to conduct jallikattu as part of a church festival in Vellodu village in Dindigul district was filed at the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Thursday.
Madurai
After hearing the petition, the court directed Dindigul Collector to file the steps taken to grant permission for conducting jallikattu in the village.
Innasi, a resident of Vellodu, in his petition had stated that the sport was being conducted for several years during the St Santhiyagappar Church festival and it had become a tradition in the village. This year too, they had decided to conduct the event on February 11 and had submitted a letter to the Dindigul Collector seeking his permission. But, the district administration was yet to respond to the villagers’ petition.
Therefore, the court should direct the Dindigul Collector to grant permission for the jallikattu in their village, the petitioner prayed.
When the petition was came up for hearing before a bench, comprising Justices Kirubakaran and Tharani, the public prosecutor (PP) said that already there was a problem between Hindus and Christians in conducting jallikattu. So, a peace meeting has been proposed and steps would be taken to conduct the event jointly, the PP informed the court.
The judges then directed the Dindigul Collector to file the steps taken to grant permission for conducting the jallikattu at Vellodu by January 9 and adjourned the case.
