    Circular mandating vakalats deferred

    A division bench of the Madras High Court on Wednesday deferred the implementation of a circular directing the registry not to accept Vakalat/Memo of appearance mandating advocates to affix photo identity cards, enrolment number, mobile number and complete residential address of the concerned advocate till March 1.

    The bench comprising Justice Huluvadi G Ramesh and Justice RMT Teekaa Raman on hearing a batch of appeals moved by the Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA), Madras Bar Association (MBA) and others against the circular as well as the order of a single judge in this regard, ordered notice to the suo motu impleaded respondent Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and the high court registry returnable by four weeks. 

    The bench then directed the Registrar-General not to implement the circular dated Dec 29, 2017, relating to filing of vakalats/memo of appearance.

    The issue pertains to an order passed by a single judge of the court in November 2017 mandating advocates filing cases to paste the photo of the advocate on-record along with details of enrolment number, residential and office address and contact number, on vakalats.
