Vellore cops initiating steps to end drag race

Vairamuthu was driving a KTM 390, when he lost control and rammed into a barricade and died on the spot. He was not wearing helmet or any other protective gear. The victim’s parents have not filed a complaint till date. “These illegal races are organised in weekends or during festivals,” said a police source. 

“A prize of Rs 1 lakh goes to the rider, who covers the 180 km between Ambur and Chennai within 90 minutes. Entry fee is Rs 5000 per head and 50 riders are to participate in each race,” sources added. These illegal races are gaining popularity in the locality as organisers easily earn Rs 1 lakh profit. 

Sources say that a proposal for a 350-km race from Bengaluru to Chennai is being planned via Vellore. The distance has to be covered in three-and-ahalf-hours for which the prize money is said to be Rs 2 lakh. For longer distances, two riders per vehicle are allowed. 

“If this proposal becomes a reality we will be helpless as 140 km in Vellore district is right in the middle of the entire stretch. We are stepping up the vigil against the illegal activity,” police said.
