    Collector sets example; goes to GH for appendectomy

    At a time when even lower grade government staff prefer to visit private hospitals for any kind of ailment, the Ariyalur Government Hospital had a high profile patient on Monday. It was none other than the district Collector, who preferred the public hospital to undergo a surgery for appendicitis.

    G Laxmi Priya, the district Collector, who was ailing for the past few months with appendicitis had much faith in the GH of her district, which has been equipped with the laparoscopic surgery equipment available for the past two years. Earlier the district used to depend on Tiruchy and Thanjavur.

    When the Collector experienced a severe abdominal pain on Sunday evening, she preferred to go to the Ariyalur GH for treatment. “After the Collector visited our hospital with a complaint about abdominal pain, we sent her for a scan on Monday morning, which showed that she had appendicitis. Our diagnosis also suggested that she needed an immediate surgical intervention. So, we decided to go with laparoscopic surgical procedure,” said Dr R Ramesh, Chief Medical Officer, Ariyalur GH.

    The Collector underwent the surgery between 7 and 8 pm. The doctors stated that the Collector is recovering fast and is now walking. She has been advised medical rest of a week and will be discharged on Wednesday evening. 

    The Collector’s decision to undergo surgery in a government hospital has motivated the government health officials and also the public. “The hospital has been steadily improving its facilities, ever since Laxmi Priya had assumed charge as the Collector. We get a footfall of at least 1,500 outpatients on a given day.
