Monsoon to end today: Meteorological department
After providing substantial rainfall in city and rest of the state, the north-east monsoon will withdraw from the state on Sunday. Weathermen at Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said that rains from January 1, 2018 onwards will be considered as winter rain.

According to weathermen, the monsoon hit the state on October 26. The rain started pounding Chennai in the beginning of November and there was no rain activity in December. However, the temperature level steadily dropped than usual in the city and Western areas. While Chennai city recorded excessive rainfall, rest of Chennai experienced nine percent deficit rainfall.
Speaking to DT Next, S B Thampi, Deputy Director General of Meteorology said, “The amount of rainfall between October and December will be calculated as Northeast monsoon rains. Rains after December month will be considered as ‘winter rain’. So, the monsoon has come to an end with December 31.” Officials at RMC would soon announce withdrawal of North-East monsoon, he added.
“It is an irony that just as the official season for North-East monsoon 2017 is coming to close at around 8.30 am on Sunday, there was some isolated passing spells of showers over a few areas of Chennai on Friday as the Easterlies tried their best to bring some cheer,” said K Srikanth, a weather blogger of Chennayil oru Mazhaikkalam.
