Survey begins for Jaya memorial at Veda Nilayam
Four months after Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced that Veda Nilayam at Poes Garden would be converted into a memorial, the land acquisition process officially began on Saturday with officials surveying the place and the building.

Former Chief Minster and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa had lived in that house for about three decades.
The 24,000 sq ft plot with a bungalow measuring 21,662 sq ft was inspected by 10 officials from various departments including Public Works (PWD), Survey, Revenue, Information-Publicity and Police, who were led by Chennai Collector V Anbuselvan.
Since Income Tax officials had issued prohibitory orders against unlocking two rooms in the house after it was raided in November, I-T officials were also present to oversee the process. “We informed the I-T department and they deputed 10 officials to witness the inspection. The survey lasted for four hours with everybody’s co-operation,” said the Anbuselvan.
The official also said that the surveying committee would submit a final report on the total extent of land based on which a notice would be issued under Land Acquisition Act.
“It will be followed by a public hearing meet and Social Impact Assessment study by a third party, after which the award for acquisition will be issued,” said the Collector.
Based on the assessment, the government will release the compensation and since Jayalalithaa did not have an established direct legal heir, the sum would be submitted at the court.
About 500 police personnel were deployed outside Veda Nilayam to prevent unlawful gathering and vehicles and pedestrians were allowed in only after the screening.
