All panchayats in Thanjai finish total sanitation drive
As many as 1,48,700 individual house hold latrines (IHL) are being constructed at Thanjavur district and the works would becompleted by the month end. All the 589 village panchayats would be declared as total sanitation villages by January 2, said district collector A Annadurai here on Wednesday.

As a part of total sanitation drive, A Annadurai, who has been visiting the villages across the district, addressed a special grama sabha meeting at Mela Uloor village panchayat in Orathanadu panchayat union. The collector said a target of 3.79 lakh IHL was fixed and so far 2.3 lakh latrines were built and used by the residents of villages across the district.
The Government has been providing Rs 12,000 as subsidy for the construction of the IHLs. He also said out of 879 houses in the Mela Uloor panchayat as many as 809 houses do have IHLs. The IHLs are being constructed in the remaining 70 houses also, he added.
The collector said all the 589 village panchayats in the district would be observing total sanitation from January 2, 2018 onwards. He sought the support of the students from the district to work hand in hand with the initiatives taken by the district administration.
