Timely coordination between district police units averts honour killing
Timely coordination between police stations, averted an honour killing in Tiruchy as the Karur police secured a caste Hindu man along with his nine aides. He had kidnapped his daugther who married her Dalit college mate at Melur in Madurai and confined her in a secluded location near Karur in the late hours on Tuesday. They were handed over to the Melur police in the wee hours of Wednesday.

It is said, Manithaneyam (24), a Dalit youth from Alangudi in Pudukkottai was in love with S Swetha (22), a caste Hindu girl from Pettaivaithalai. Swetha went missing from her house in November and her father Selvam, an AIADMK functionary, lodged a complaint with the Pettaivathalai police. Since she could not be traced, Selvam filed a habeas corpus petition in the Madurai bench of Madras High Court.
As per court directions, Swetha along with Manithaneyam appeared in the Court on Tuesday and explained that they had got married on November 22.
The court directed to send Swetha along with Manithaneyam. When the couple took the bus from Madurai Mattuthavani bus stand to Pudukkottai, a group of 10 persons led by Swetha’s father Selvam who came in two cars, intercepted the TNSTC bus at Melur and kidnapped Swetha.
Manithaneyam who went to rescue her was thrown away and he lodged a complaint with the Melur police who alerted all the police stations. When the police learnt that the vehicles were proceeding to Karur, they commenced a vehicle check.
Meanwhile, Karur police stopped a car at 8.30 pm at Court Road and interrogated the driver who revealed that Swetha was confined at a house in Bharathidasan Nagar near Velliyanai.
They went to the house at 11.30 pm and secured Selvam and nine others. Swetha was also secured and she told the police that her parents had compelled her to forget Manithaneyam and get married to a groom of their choice.
