Speaking at the Power Ministers Conference in New Delhi, the minister said some of the thermal units are under shutdown for want of coal and appealed to the Centre to arrange for coal supply to avoid power outages in the state. The state had requested the Union government to direct Coal India Limited (CIL) to supply 72,000 metric tonnes of coal on daily basis and direct railway authorities to allot 20 rakes every day.

In the power generated by Koodankulam power plant, the state had been allocated 1,125 MW of power from units 1 and 2 having a total installed capacity of 2,000 MW.

The Union government must issue necessary instructions to the Nuclear Power Corporation of India to expedite the works and bring back Unit 2 on bars at the earliest. In the power generated by units 3 and 4 of the plant, the entire generation of 2,000 MW must be allocated to the state, he said. He also wanted the union government to expedite the bidding process for the establishment of Cheyyur ultra mega power project.

He said the state had harnessed 11,200 million unit of energy from wind during 2017-18. At present, having met the Renewable Purchase Obligation, Tamil Nadu is in a position to sell wind power to other states and it wants a state green energy corridor for evacuation of power to other needy states, he added.
