    Tamilisai refutes Opposition’s charges

Taking exception to the charges of opposition leaders that the Centre had failed to provide sufficient assistance to retrieve Kanniyakumari fishermen stranded in the aftermath of Cyclone Ockhi, BJP state president Tamilisai Soundarrajan, on Wednesday, said Defence minister Nirmala Seetharaman had personally monitored the rescue operations round the clock.

Responding to the allegations of Leader of Opposition MK Stalin and MDMK general secretary Vaiko, she said the ships in our Navy rushed to retrieve the fishermen who were in distress and messages were passed to ships of other countries who were passing through the route.

The defence minister who hailed from Tamil Nadu had ensured the co-ordinated action of army, Navy and air force, but the opposition leaders did not have the heart to appreciate her good work, Tamilisai told reporters here.

She asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home minister provided all kinds of assistance to save the fishermen as soon as they came to know about the perilous situation.

But, the allegations of Stalin and Vaiko are causing anguish, she said and charged the two leaders with trying to gain political mileage out of the tragic circumstances.

The Defence minister had rushed to Kanyakumari immediately after coming to know about the distress situation, Tamilisai said. Political parties had the right to point out the defects, but they should also appreciate good actions taken by the Centre, she added.

Stalin had attacked the state and Central governments for lack of clarity on the number of missing fishermen. Vaiko had criticised Nirmala Seetharaman for disputing the fishermen’s account on the number of missing fishermen.

The MDMK leader stated that the fishermen had given their account based on the number of fishermen who left for fishing before the cyclone and the reports of the families of fishermen.
