    Kanniyakumari limping back to normalcy post ‘Ockhi’

    While power supply has been restored in the urban and semi-urban areas of Kanniyakumari, many rural areas in the district are still in the dark. As the basic amenities supply are gradually restored from urban areas to rural areas, normalcy is slowly returning to the cyclone-hit district.

    Cyclone Ockhi had wrecked havoc in Kanniyakumari district on November 29 and 30 and lives of people of the district was thrown out of gear completely.

    A large number of trees had fallen on the road and on the electric poles, which affected the power supply in the entire district. With no power supply, the availability of drinking water was also affected as many households are dependent on the electric motors.

    Meanwhile, the entire official machinery had camped in the district and are working round the clock. According to the TNEB officials, out of 10,500 electricity posts damaged in the cyclone, around 80 percent have been repaired.

    Electricity supply had been restored completely in four municipalities, eight town panchayats and 50 percent of rural areas. The electricity supply would be fully restored in another three days, said officials.

    They aslo said that though the electricity supply had been affected in several areas, drinking water supply is being taken care with help of generators by the civic authority.

    Meanwhile, higher officials from State Forest Department visited the hilly villages and tribal areas where large number of trees had fallen down and inspected the rescue works under way.

    Top officials from Revenue and Agricultural departments carried out inspection at various government offices and agricultural fields to assess the crop losses. They also interacted with the farmers in the region to hear their grievances regarding the loss suffered by them.
