“The dip in storage level has facilitated commencement of repair works in the dam. The damaged shutter will be replaced with a new one and it might take around 10 days for works to be completed,” said C Kathiravan, Collector, Krishnagiri district.

Meanwhile, the district administration has made an appeal to the state government to replace all the eight main shutters of the dam. “A proposal has been submitted to replace all the eight shutters. It is likely to be accepted and an announcement is likely to be made in the budget session,” the Collector said.

He also said that the damaged shutter would be replaced with a new one and it would be fixed at a height of 42 feet as against other shutters which were placed at a height of 52 feet, the full storage capacity of the dam. This makes it impossible to store water to full capacity of the dam as water will gush out.

“This is a temporary arrangement as it will be time consuming and difficult to source raw materials for the contractor to fix the shutter in its original height. A further delay in fixing the shutter might lead to further loss of water from the dam. Farmers need not panic as efforts would be made to restore the dam to its full reservoir capacity soon,” said Kathiravan.

The dam was opened to let out water in order to take up repair works. From 36.15 feet on Sunday, the dam’s storage level dropped to 32 feet on Monday. It had an inflow of 1402 cusecs.
