150 country boats yet to be traced

Despite a contradiction between government officials and locals on the exact number of fishermen missing, fishers in Kanniyakumari claimed on Sunday that as per data received through control rooms and information centres, at least 40 mechanised boats and 150 country boats were yet to be traced. Meanwhile, 83 fishermen from Tamil Nadu were rescued in Lakshadweep.

Over 1,000 fishermen from Erayumanthurai, Poothurai, Thoothoor, Chinnathurai, Puthenthurai, Vallavilai, Marthandamthurai and Neerodi villages, where country boats are used for fishing, are yet to return. “On Sunday, 10 bodies were washed ashore off Vizhinjam. Many of us have been visiting Thiruvananthapuram Medical College to identify bodies,” D Maria Dhason, kin of a fisherman whose country boat is yet to reach the shore, told DTNext.

Many fishermen from Tamil Nadu were rescued off Vizhinjam coast and admitted to the medical college. Sources said that the condition of at least half of the fishermen rescued remained critical.

Migrant labourers from states like Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Utter Pradesh are also involved in fishing activities. They too are missing, C Bernard, a functionary from the Fishermen’s Association in Colachel, said.
