Rains push up storage in reservoirs across TN
Rain in Chennai region and Southern and delta regions has filled main reservoirs across the state, to a large extent. While farmers are happy about rainfall, Chennai suburbs need more rain, as water level in metro lakes is not enough to meet the drinking water needs in Chennai.

After North-East monsoon hit the state, Southern and Delta districts and Chennai regions have been receiving good rain. Moreover, the southern parts, particularly Tirunelvelli, Thoothukudi, Theni and Delta districts like Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Nagapattinam have received extremely heavy rain in the last one week. Even while Chennai and suburbs received heavy spells of rain in the first week of November, rain activity gradually reduced since
Meanwhile, farmers across delta region, who earlier pinned hopes about rainfall are on cloud nine, as the delta districts have been receiving substantial rainfall and continuous flow into the river Cauvery.
“We were earlier uncertain about Samba cultivation, but the recent rains have given hopes for farmers across delta and other districts to undertake such cultivatio in a proper manner,” said V Neelakandan, president of Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, Perambalur district.
He added that even though discharge of water from Mettur dam was reduced to 500 cusecs from 7,000 cusecs, the government should discharge water to the delta districts, whenever necessary.
