TN tops country in cases of trafficking women in 2016
Tamil Nadu has emerged as the state recording the maximum number of cases on human trafficking for prostitution, according to the latest National Crime Record Bureau statistics, which was released on Thursday.

Of the total 4,980 cases reported in the country in 2016, TN had 1,087 cases followed by Maharashtra with 1,020 cases. Andhra Pradesh reported 736 cases in the same period. Rajasthan leads in human trafficking for forced labour with 5,099 cases while Tamil Nadu recorded 1,200 such cases of the total 10,509 ones reported in India.
During the same period, Tamil Nadu had also rescued 1,781 women from traffickers.
The state had also recorded 434 cases under Immoral Traffic (prevention) Act, which is the highest in the country.
Incidentally, the number of crimes against women came down to 4,463 in 2016 in Tamil Nadu as compared to the previous years. In 2014, 6,354 cases of crimes against women were recorded, which went down in 2015 to 5,919 cases.
As many as 59 people died in dowry-related deaths in TN with UP leading the chart with 2,478 such deaths. There were 855 cases of assault on women in Tamil Nadu while Maharashtra reported that 11,454 faced such assaults - the highest number of victims among the state. Cases of crimes against children in TN has gone up to 2,856 in 2016 from 2,617 reported in 2015.Â
Interestingly, the number of cases of children in conflict with law also went up from 1,814 in 2015 to 2,217 in 2016. TN ranks sixth in the category. According to NCRB data, TN topped in the number of the cases registered under prevention of damage to public property act with 1,818 cases.Â
In cases related to information technology / intellectual property, TN ranked second with 1,778 cases while UP topped the list with 2,933 cases. As per crime rate, Tamil Nadu recorded a rate of 258.8 (number of IPC crimes per one lakh population).
