According to the RMC, the recent satellite imageries indicate that a depression had formed over South-West Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka coast on Wednesday.

“The system is likely to have crossed Sri Lanka around noon on Wednesday. It will then move West-Northwestwards across and emerge into Kanniyakumari on Thursday,” said a weatherman. The system will intensify into a deep depression during the next 24 hours resulting in heavy rainfall in the southern districts, he added.

“Rain is likely to increase from Wednesday night and continue till Thursday afternoon.

Parts of Kanniyakumari and Tirunelveli districts and several places along the Western Ghats could record heavy spells of rain,” said K Srikanth, a weather blogger of Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikkalam.

Most of Tamil Nadu is likely to receive rain as the system moves North-West, bringing with it a stronger moisture filled Easterlies from the Bay of Bengal, he added.

Southern districts battered by heavy downpour

There is no respite from rain for the coastal areas in southern districts as rain continued on Wednesday. The meteorological department had forecast heavy rain due to the low pressure near Sri Lanka.

Rameswaram continued to suffer as the sea remained rough and there were high tides throughout and close to 10 boats were damaged. In Pamban island, high tides resulted in inundation of sea water into the fishing hamlets. Rain continued to lash Rameswaram every few hours throughout the day.

The overall rainfall received in Rameswaram was 62.8 mm till 5.30 am on Wednesday. Cyclone warning number three has been issued at Pamban harbour and fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea.
