Cart owners unaware of HC order seek nod to ferry sand
Tension prevailed in Karur after 80 bullock cart owners, unaware of the HC order, proceeded to the Collectorate on Wednesday to surrender their Aadhaar card, ration card and voter ID condemning the district administration that prevented them to transport sand.

However, they were stopped mid-way by the police. It is said, Karur district administration had banned sand mining along the Cauvery and Amaravathi beds, citing court direction.
The cart owners approached Collector G Govindaraj and urged him to allow them to mine sand. But the collector refused and closed all entrypoints to the rivers. On Wednesday, 80 bullock cart owners along with their carts from Somur came in a procession to besiege the Collecterate.
When the procession reached Melapalayam, the DSP and his team halted them. But, the protesters could not be deterred and they blocked the road preventing movement of traffic in the Karur highway.
Later, the police officials held talks and pacified them. Thought the protesters left the spot, they announced that they would hold a demonstration on Thursday.
