The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast isolated heavy spells of rains in coastal districts and Puducherry during the next 48 hours, as a new trough of low pressure lies over South-West Bay of Bengal and adjoining South-East Sri Lanka. However, Chennai city will record just intermittent mild rains for two more days.

Speaking to DT NEXT, S B Thampi, Deputy Director General of Meteorology, said that the low-pressure will bring heavy rain in a few parts in the state.

A city-based weather blogger said, “With the low-pressure area of Sri Lanka slowly making its way towards the open waters of Comorin Sea (Kanniyakumari), rain is likely to continue over coastal areas.

Recent indications are that the low-pressure area possibly now lies West and South-West of Sri Lanka having completed its land interaction, as it crossed the Sri Lankan land mass while moving East to West. This could provide an opportunity for this system to regain some of the intensity, he added.

Chennai Meenambakkam recorded 10 cm of rains, of which seven cm was recorded between 11.30 pm and 2.30 am on Monday.

    Highest rainfall in state

30 flights delayed as runway inundated
With Meenambakkam receiving up to 10 cm rainfall on Sunday night, the departure and arrival of nearly 30 national and international flights were delayed between one and three hours at the Chennai airport. A Lufthansa flight with 348 passengers from Germany was diverted to Bengaluru as the runway was flooded. Later, the flight returned to Chennai at 3.30 am and departed to Germany four hours later at 5.30 am. Meanwhile, flights arriving from different countries, including Paris, Singapore and Doha, were made to hover over the airport and workers cleared the runway for safe landing of flights whenever rains receded. The departure of several flights was delayed since the cabin crew reported for duty late due to traffic snarl in the city.
