Lankan Navy arrests two for smuggling 710 kg of agro-chemical substance
Sri Lankan Navy arrested two Tamil Nadu fishermen in their territorial waters for smuggling 710 kilograms of agro-chemical substance, on Saturday.

The incident happened in the night when an inshore patrol craft of Sri Lankan Navy was moving in the southern seas. It had then intercepted a fishing dhow, south of Mannar lighthouse. When the dhow was checked, the Navy personnel found 15 gunny bags stacked inside the dhow. On suspicion, the navy personnel opened the gunny bags. They found an agro-chemical substance named ‘glyphosate’ inside all of them.Â
In total there was 710 kilogrammes of glyphosate inside the bags. Two fishermen, who smuggled the agro-chemical substance were arrested, and their boat was impounded seized. They were then taken to the Mannar coast and handed over to the Manner police for legal action.
However, the Sri Lankan Navy refused to divulge details of the fishermen, including their origin.
