Vellore to get its toy lending library today
In a first of its kind, a toy library is set to open in Vellore. Sneha Suzannah Chandy, the brain behind the venture, said, “There will be no need for parents to buy toys, games or books for children below 12 years, as they can now be rented out and this idea was the seed for Khiloniewala, the toy and games rental, which will come to fruition on Saturday at Vellore.”

The idea is simple. The monthly membership fee of Rs.400, (in addition to a refundable deposit of Rs.750), will enable a member to borrow games, toys or books worth Rs 4,000 and use them for two weeks. “We have nine different plans, including monthly, quarterly and annual ones, based on what a member needs,” said Chandy, speaking to DTNext. There are over 250 products available in all categories with plans on the anvil to add more when demand increases. “The concept is yet to take off in the southern states as such libraries exist in many north Indian states. In the south, toy libraries are available only in Bengaluru and Kochi,” she added.
Started with a capital of Rs 6 lakh, Chandy said when she first mooted among friends, it received a good response and resulted in the starting of the library at Vellore “The idea took shape when it was put on Facebook and WhatsApp and today we have had both requests and enquiries to start a similar venture at Tiruchy”, she added.
The project will be inaugurated by Tiruchy MLA R Karthikeyan, while former CMC director Dr Sunil Thomas Chandy will be the chief guest. The library would function from Kagithapattarai, on Arcot Road.
