On seeing the pachyderm, the duo took to their heels, but the elephant chased Sakthivel. It flung him to the ground and he died on the spot.

Meanwhile, Ponnusamy came back with villagers, but the elephant stood rooted to the spot and refused to move. On receiving information, the forest department staff came there and drove the pachyderm back into the jungles.

The body of the deceased was then sent for post-mortem to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).

Villagers, who spent a sleepless night fearing an attack by the elephant, resorted to a protest on Friday morning. Around 200 villagers, including women and school students, blocked the road near Pallam bus stop demanding to repair defunct street lights.

They said they had to walk for a kilometre to reach the bus stop. As the street lights along the stretch had stopped working, villagers claimed that they were unable to spot elephants in darkness.
