    Youth gets 10-year jail for murdering friend

    A special court in Coimbatore awarded ten years of imprisonment to a youth on charges of murdering his friend studying in a private engineering college following a petty quarrel over cleaning the room they were staying in the year 2015.

    According to the prosecution, S Dinesh from Namakkal and R Santhosh from The Nilgiris, both aged 21 and studying final year in a private engineering college were staying in a rented house in Kalapatty neighbourhood.

    They used to take turns to sweep the room on alternative days. A quarrel broke out between them, when Dinesh failed to sweep the room on July 27, 2015. Following a heated exchange of words, Santhosh took a knife and stabbed his friend.

    Neighbours, who came rushing on hearing the loud noise, took a profusely bleeding Dinesh to a private hospital. However, he succumbed to injuries on the same day.

    A case was registered at the Peelamedu police station and the accused was arrested. A case was registered under IPC section 302 for murder, but was later altered to 304 (1) for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

    On hearing the case, the special court judge M Gunasekaran on Thursday awarded ten years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1000, which if failed to pay will attract another three months of prison term
