Stating that they had filed a case in the Madras High Court, a PG student, preferring anonymity, said, “The hearing had been postponed to Tuesday. However, it got delayed and the case was not taken up. Even though it was listed, it was not taken up on Wednesday. Though we are continuing our agitation, Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan and Director of Medical Education Dr Edwin Joe have not responded.”

With their main demand being that counselling for service postgraduates be held first, he said, “There is a Government Order (GO) stating that the counselling for postgraduates should happen first and then the MRB walk in interview. We are also demanding that the term walk in interview not be used hereafter and that no one be appointed through that method,” he said, adding that their demand also includes that an eligibility exam be conducted for all doctors who want to work under service through which they are selected. The Doctors’ Association for Social Equality (DASE), had, on Tuesday, extended solidarity with the protesting postgraduates, by joining in their agitation.

When DT Next contacted Dr Edwin Joe, he said, “This counselling is being conducted specifically for PG service candidates so that they can be benefitted, and the seats left by them can be filled up directly. We are not going to cancel the counselling just because they are protesting.”
