Two sand miners electrocuted during police chase
Two sand miners who were mining sand illegally died of electrocution when they accidentally stumbled upon an electric fence when police chased them at Veppillaipatti village in Virudhunagar district, on Tuesday.

The incident happened in the night when a gang of nine illegal sand miners had gone to mine sand at Arjuna river bed near Veppillaipatti. When the police sensed the illegal sand mining, a team went to the spot immediately. On seeing the policemen, the illegal sand miners took to their heels.Â
In the incident, six of them had escaped and police chased three of them. Out of them, Marimuthu managed to escape from the police but two of them Thilagar and Gnanasekar were continuously chased down by the policemen.Â
When the duo tried to escape, they entered a farm, owned by Kannayiram. But, the fence was wound by electrical lines of high voltage. When the duo came in contact with the fence, they were thrown off. According to the police, the duo had died on the spot.Â
In the morning, when Baskaran, elder brother of Thilagar, had called on his mobile phone, police personnel answered the phone and informed him about the death of his brother. Initially, Baskaran and his family claimed that police had killed the duo, but later it was confirmed that they had died of electrocution.Â
Police had picked up Kannayiram and are investigating him.
