Alleging that the egg supply under nutritious meal scheme has been stopped owing to the lethargic attitude shown by the state government in procuring eggs, Stalin said that it was shameful that a government indifferent to the future and nutritional requirements of school students is in place in the state.

Recalling how the DMK had introduced the scheme in 1989 and supplied an egg a student every fortnight and increased the frequency to one per week in 1998 before strengthening the scheme to two eggs per week in 2006 and three per student per week in 2007, the DMK working president said, the DMK had contributed to reducing poverty-inducted school dropout cases and helped increase the nutritional intake of school children.

Pointing out that about 69 lakh school students above the age of two were being supplied eggs under nutritious meal scheme, the LoP alleged that the AIADMK regime had weakened the nutritious meal program by introducing “variety rice” and procuring egg at higher price even when egg price was low.

Accusing the AIADMK regime of indulging in irregularities in egg procurement, Stalin claimed that the High Court litigation had unearthed a scam in egg procurement. He added that it was painful to note that the AIADMK regime, which had spoiled nutritious meal scheme in all possible ways, has now made efforts to completely stop egg supply to school students in the state.
