It was a daring act by unidentified persons, said the police. They explained that the burglars had broken the ATM with a gas cutting machine and walked away with Rs 1.95 lakhs.
According to the police, the incident happened at midnight when the burglars had entered the ATM centre run by ‘india1ATM’ and disconnected the CCTV line. They had then damaged the CCTV cameras and cut all the electric lines to prevent the alarm from going off.
The burglars had then used a gas cutter to open the lower part of the ATM centre where the cash is usually kept. The burglars had then walked away with Rs1,95,200 and fled the scene.
Fingerprint experts and dog squad were brought to the scene of crime by the Vadipatti police.
“Though the burglars had damaged the CCTV cameras at the ATM, we feel that since the centre is located on the Madurai-Kanniyakumari national highways, there is every possibility of them being captured in at least one of the CCTV cameras at the toll plazas,” hoped the police.
Also before cutting the CCTV camera wires, image of one of the burglars had been recorded and police are investigating on it. Police sources said that the gang should have taken note of the fact that the ATM centre had no security personnel and then decided to burgle it.
