Students’ team discover two inscriptions in Ramanathapuram
A team of students from government higher secondary school at Thirupullani stumbled upon two new inscriptions when they visited the Adi Jagannatha Perumal Temple at Thirupullani in Ramanathapuram district, on Sunday as part of the ‘World Heritage Week’ celebrations.

Rajaguru, an English teacher of the school, had taken as many as 35 students to the Adi Jagannatha Perumal Temple to explain to them about the scripts involved in the inscriptions and their preserving techniques.
He also taught them the technique of estampage to the students. While the children were involved in the learning process, they stumbled upon two inscriptions that were found partially buried. “The inscriptions belong to the 13 th Century,” said Rajaguru. One of the inscriptions was small and were just a feet tall. Very near the small one, the students found another large inscription.
But, they could not unearth it as it was huge.
The inscriptions belonged to later Pandiya Kings and the details of the land donated to the temple are found in the inscription. However, the name of the king has not been mentioned.
Though another larger inscription is lying buried in sand with its top protruding, it could not be taken out due to its massive structure and only experts can deal with it, explained Rajaguru.
Speaking to DTNEXT, Rajaguru said that he had been into epigraphy for more than 10 years and in the last one year he had given training on epigraphy to seven Class 10 students.
He had also taken them on camps.
On Sunday, the seven students gave training to 28 students on estampage. ‘World Heritage Week’ is celebrated from November 19 to 25 to make people aware of the importance of cultural heritages and their preservation.
