    Libraries, a great learning curve: Labour Minister Nilofer Kafeel

    The state government started the book cluster classroom libraries, in a bid to ensure that school students benefitted from a bank of books in schools, Labour Minister Nilofer Kafeel said, while speaking at the National Library week celebrations in Vellore on Sunday.

    Stating that Tamil Nadu boasted of more than 5,000 libraries, she revealed that more than 180 of them were functioning in Vellore district, which she said would go a long way in helping students improve and expand their knowledge.

    Handing over prizes for various competitions conducted by the District Central Library, in connection with the celebrations, Commercial Taxes Minister KC Veeramani said the state was known for its learning, not only now, but also in the past, and palm-leaf manuscripts are proof of the knowledge of our ancestors. An agreement was signed with a New Delhi company to preserve palm-leaf manuscripts in both the Thanjavur and Chennai libraries, he added.

    Vellore Collector SA Raman said although land had been allotted to the Ambur and Sholingur libraries, work was yet to commence on the buildings. A number of officials took part in the event.
